Gary Walpert is a highly experienced and knowledgeable Patent and Intellectual Property Attorney at Chapin Intellectual Property Law, LLC.
Gary attended Harvard Law School and also earned S.B, M.S. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from
Massachusetts Institue of Technology (MIT). He has practiced patent law for many years at several large law firms in Boston
and New York City and is well versed in patent drafting and prosecution, licensing and other IP transactions
such as opinions, patent litigation, due diligence, copyright, trademark and patent portfolio management.
His patent drafting and prosecution experience is robust and includes a broad array of technologies with a focus
on the electrical, computer, software, medical and mechanical arts. He also has significant patent litigation
experience including both trials in federal district court as well as before the
International Trade Commission (ITC). He also has significant transactional IP experience
including preparing and reviewing licensing and commercial agreements relating to various technologies. Examples include
software development agreements, supply agreements, OEM agreements and legal opinions. Gary is also quite knowlegable in
managing patent portfolios from a strategic and monetization perspective and he has significant IP strategy
and counseling experience.
Prior to joining Chapin IP Law, Gary's legal career included holding Senior Partner, Special Patent Counsel and Of
Counsel positions within the IP and Patent practice groups at several large well-known national law firms including
Fish & Richardson LLP, Hale and Dorr/Wilmer Hale LLP, K&L Gates LLP, Byrne Poh LLP and Pierce Atwood LLP.
He has excellent experience in IP drafting and prosecution, IP counseling, opinions, IP investment transactions
and IP litigation in numerous and varied technology fields. Examples include computer hardware and software,
telecommunication systems, cell phone and networking equipment, mechanical/medical devices, media/advertising and
other technology areas. In addition, Gary has significant experience handling complex IP transations and matters
including due diligence related to purchasing or investing in target company assets on behalf of private equity or
hedge funds, licensing technologies, drafting validity and infringement opinions, and trademark and patent prosecution.
During his career, Gary was chosen for inclusion in the Best Lawyers in America (2005-2009) and in the
Massachusetts Super Lawyers directory (2004-2008). He has also given several presentations before the
American Bar Association - Intellectual Property Section as well as the American Intellectual Property Law
Association (AIPLA). He has also lectured on IP due diligence throughout the United States and has presented
before a Price Waterhouse Coopers affiliate in Tel-Aviv. He is registered to practice law and is a Member of the Bar in both
New York State and in Massachusetts. Gary is also a Registered Patent Attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark
Office. Gary lives in Metrowest Boston and in addition to practiving patent law, he enjoys travel and spending time
with his family and friends.
