Gary Walpert is a highly experienced and knowledgeable Patent and Intellectual Property Attorney at Chapin
Intellectual Property Law, LLC with over 26 years of experience in patent and IP law. Gary attended Harvard Law School
and earned S.B, M.S. and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
He practiced patent law for many years at several of the
largest well-known and prestigious IP and Patent law firms in Boston and in New York City. Gary is very well
versed in patent drafting and prosecution in a variety of technologies. He also has significant experience handling
other IP transactions including licensing, rendering opinions, handling patent litigation, due diligence,
copyright, trademark and strategic mangement of patent portfolios on behalf of clients large and small.
His patent drafting and prosecution experience is robust and
includes fluency in a broad array of technologies with a focus on the electrical, computer, software, Internet/web,
medical device and mechanical arts. He has significant patent litigation experience including both trials in
Federal District Court
as well as before the International Trade Commission (ITC). He significant transactional IP experience includes
preparing and reviewing licensing and commercial agreements relating to various technologies. Examples include
software development agreements, supply agreements, OEM agreements and legal opinions. Gary is very knowledgeable
in the area of patent portfolio management from a strategic and monetization perspective, and he has significant
IP strategy and counseling experience.
Prior to joining Chapin IP Law, Gary's legal career included holding Senior Partner, Special Patent Counsel
and Of Counsel positions within the IP and Patent practice groups at several large well-known national law firms
including Fish & Richardson LLP, Hale and Dorr/Wilmer Hale LLP, K&L Gates LLP, Byrne Poh LLP and Pierce Atwood LLP.
He has in-depth technical expertise in many different technology fields such as computer hardware and software,
telecommunication systems, cell phone and data networking equipment, mechanical and medical devices/systems/software,
media/advertising, robotics and numerous other technology sectors. In addition, Gary has considerable experience
handling complex IP transactions and matters including due diligence related to purchasing or investing in target
company assets on behalf of private equity or hedge funds, licensing technologies, drafting validity and
infringement opinions, and foreign and domestic trademark prosecution.
During his career, Gary has been listed in the Best Lawyers in America (2005-2009) and in the Massachusetts
Super Lawyers directory (2004-2008). He has also given several presentations before the Intellectual Property Section of
the American Bar Association (ABA), as well as the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). He has
lectured on IP due diligence throughout the United States and has presented before a Price Waterhouse Coopers
affiliate in Tel-Aviv. He is registered to practice law and is a Member of the Bar in both New York State and in
Massachusetts. Gary is also a Registered Patent Attorney before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
Gary lives in Metro-West Boston and enjoys travel and spending time with his family and friends.
