Josh is a Registered Patent Attorney at Chapin Intellectual Property Law, LLC, where
his practice focuses on patent drafting and prosecution in software, mechanical
devices, business methods, computer hardware, and medical devices. Josh also has
significant experience preparing and prosecuting trademark applications. Prior to
joining Chapin IP Law, Josh gained significant patent and trademark experience while
working with boutique patent and trademark law firms in Massachusetts and Maine. He
gained particular experience drafting and prosecuting numerous patents on inventions
in various software and computer-related technologies and is very fluent in many areas
of computer science. Josh also worked at the U.S. International Trade Commission in
Washington, D.C., in the Office of Unfair Import Investigations where he assisted in
IP litigation.
Josh drafts and prosecutes patent applications for clients of all sizes. He
has extensive experience in drafting and prosecuting both U.S. and foreign patent
applications. In addition to working with large companies, Josh has worked with
several start-up companies to manage and develop patent portfolios. He has experience
performing patent and trademark searches, prosecuting patent applications including
appeal work, preparing patentability opinions and preparing non-infringement opinions.
Josh has experience working in multiple technology areas including: software,
Internet, mechanical devices, medical devices, business and marketing methods,
nondestructive testing, RFID, linguistics, computer hardware, VOIP, storage area
networking, circuit design testing, interactive voice recognition, secure data entry,
and aerospace device testing.
Josh graduated from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, with a Bachelor
of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering. Josh holds a Juris Doctorate from
Franklin Pierce Law School in Concord, New Hampshire, where he participated in the
Giles Sutherland Rich moot court competition for patent law. Josh is a member of the
Bar of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is registered to practice before the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office.
