Mike has over 18 years of experience practicing in
patent and intellectual property law. Prior to joining Chapin IP Law, Mike was in-house corporate Patent Counsel for
over four and a half years at The MathWorks, Inc. which is a large technical engineering software development company
located in the Boston area. MathWorks produces the industry-standard MATLAB and Simulink engineering software
platforms. While at MathWorks, Mike gained significant patent practice experience in implementation and management
of corporate patent procurement programs and also counseled engineering
management and executives concerning a variety of IP issues related to MathWorks' engineering software
products such as MATLAB, Simulink and others. He also drafted and prosecuted MathWorks patent applications in a
broad array of software and related technologies. Prior to MathWorks, Mike practiced patent law for many years in
private practice as a Patent Attorney at several larger patent/ IP law firms in the Boston, MA area.
Over his career, Mike has drafted and prosecuted many hundreds of patent applications in a wide variety of high
technology subject areas, including software, internet/web/app/SaaS/distributed systems, telecommunications and data
networking technologies, routing protocols, hardware and electronic devices, data storage, databases, security, analytics,
voice/data/image signal processing, digital and analog electronic circuits, compression/decompression, encryption/decryption,
medical devices and medical software, orthopedics and medical implants, surgical instruments, medical imaging systems,
mechanical devices, robotics, instrumentation, physics, semiconductors, algorithms and business methods. Mike has
also drafted patentability, infringement/non-infringement opinions and he has participated in litigation of patent
disputes in court.
Prior to entering the legal field, Mike worked in Software and Computer Engineering for over 15 years in the
computer and telecommunications fields for several high-technology companies. He has experience developing firmware
for embedded systems, designing and developing software for use with various protocols and client/server software and
operating over private and public data communications networks and the Internet. He also developed software for
performance analytics, and he designed, developed and coded diagnostic software for testing/verifying
computer hardware systems and electronic devices. His broad and in-depth electrical, computer and software background
and his many years of patent practice experience enable Mike to quickly grasp new technologies and produce quality
patent applications that properly and accurately protect inventions across a broad array of technology sectors.
Mike graduated Magna Cum Laude from Boston University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science
and he obtained his Juris Doctorate in Law, Cum Laude, from Suffolk University School of Law in Boston, MA.
He is a member of the Bar in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and is registered as a Patent Attorney
to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
